History of Ford Trucks

History of Ford Trucks | Charleston, SC

Ford has become one of the most trusted truck brands in the country by offering the best-selling F-150, capable Super Duty, and off-road-ready Raptor. Now celebrating 100 years of leadership, Ford trucks provide the perfect combination of performance, comfort, and reliability. Starting with the Ford TT in 1917, the Ford truck lineup has come a long way since its inception.

Early Years

The Model TT was the first Ford pickup, offered nine years after the iconic Model T was introduced. The TT was built on the Model T cab and engine but also included a heavy-duty frame so it could carry an impressive one-ton payload. In the first year the Model T was introduced, 209 models were sold at a price of $600 each.

By 1928, over 1.3 million Model TTs had been sold in the US. Ford continued to develop innovative designs and the TT was replaced by the capable Model AA with a 1.5-ton chassis. Bob Kreipke, a Ford historian, notes that the “Model AA trucks in particular had a certain class to them. Customers could use them on the farm, yet still take them to church on Sunday.”

Built Ford Tough Brand

By the 1960s, Ford introduced the fourth-generation of F-Series models. This generation went through a revolution in engineering which started with twin I-beam suspensions in 1965. An upscale Ranger package and a new SuperCab option were both introduced by the early 1970s. Ford began emphasizing more comfort, value, and durability by offering affordable trucks balanced everyday commute with the capability to handle workloads. By 1977, a copywriter for a Ford truck magazine coined the phrase “Built Ford Tough” to reflect the modernized F-Series.

Ford Trucks Today

Starting in 1998, the F-Series Super Duty line was created for heavy-duty work, including models from the F-250 to the F-750. Expanded lineups also eventually included the King Ranch and Limited models with more luxury features, SYNC® infotainment, wireless capabilities, and impressive 15,000-pounds tow ranges.

Today, Ford offers incredible features and trims, including the F-150 Raptor model. Specially designed, the Raptor was the first off-road trophy truck to be built by a major manufacturer.
