2019 Ford F-150 vs. 2019 Toyota Tundra

2019 F-150 | Charleston, SC

The truck segment is one of the most cutthroat in the American car market, because we love trucks and their versatility. The 2019 Ford F-150 has consistently been the bestselling truck, but competitors like the 2019 Toyota Tundra keep trying to unseat it from the top. Does it truly measure up?

Power and towing

One of the main reasons to choose a pick-up truck over an SUV or other small vehicle is the towing and hauling capacity. In this category, the Ford F-150 runs away with the win, with best-in-class towing that beats not only gas competitors but diesel as well. For the model’s best towing capacity, check out the available 3.5-liter EcoBoost® twin-turbo V6 engine. It produces 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque for a conventional tow rating of 13,200 pounds. If you decide to go with the Ford F-150’s available diesel engine, you can still pull up to 11,400 pounds when properly equipped.

The 2019 Toyota Tundra’s towing ability is nothing to turn your nose up at, but the F-150 clearly has it beat. When equipped with its best engine, the Tundra’s towing capacity tops out at 10,200 pounds.

If towing’s not your top priority, you still want to have a variety of power levels to choose form. The 2019 Ford F-150 offers six engine options for you to choose from, whereas the 2019 Toyota Tundra only comes with three.

Cargo room

When you’re bring gear from place to place, there needs to be room for it in the bed of your truck. Both the Ford F-150 and Toyota Tundra offer three bed dimensions: 5.5-foot bed (both), 6.5-foot bed (both), 8-foot bed (F-150), or 8.1-foot bed (Tundra).

While the trucks are on pretty even footing here, Toyota’s truck comes with a bed and that’s it. The Ford F-150 has plenty of available convenience features that leave its competitor behind, like an integrated tailgate step, LED lighting, moveable tie-downs (called BoxLink), and stowable loading ramps.

Comfort

It’s great that these trucks can pull heavy loads, but ride comfort is important for all those miles ahead. The 2019 Ford F-150 offers several seating surfaces depending on your needs, ranging from cloth to vinyl and leather. If you’ll be routinely driving long hauls, you might want to look into the Ford F-150’s advanced seat options, like ventilation, heating, power adjustment options, and even a massage feature. The 2019 Toyota Tundra’s seats are also available with heat and leather options, but the features stop short of what the F-150 can offer.
